Enjoy your summer in Istanbul studying the history and culture of Istanbul at one of Turkey’s most prestigious universities and earn 6 credits (9 ECTS). Immerse yourself in Turkey’s history, traditions and people at our campus in Sile, home of Istanbul’s most renowned summer resort.

Discover Turkish and Middle East politics, culture, economy, society and art through a study of İstanbul. Deepen your understanding of Turkey with several day-long trips to major historical sites. Our program also includes elementary Turkish for students from abroad.

The teaching personnel of the Summer School is experienced, highly qualified and involved in the production of teaching material. The Program’s role is not limited to teaching Turkish. The Summer School also focuses on various activities and cultural events, including various tours in and around the city, tasting and exploring Turkish cuisine, and courses of Turkish folk dances.

The university also hosts students from all around the world, creating a multicultural learning environment. Hence, students get exposed to the Turkish way of life and enjoy friendship and hospitality of different people in the warm and lively atmosphere of Istanbul. Our campus at Sile, a suburb of Istanbul along the Black Sea Coast, also provides opportunities for various workshops and outdoor activities such as cycling, swimming, camping, hiking, rafting and beach-volleyball.

  • Istanbul and the legacy of Byzantine & Ottoman Empires
    Byzantium & Christianity, Ottomans, Politics & Political Culture, Islam, Art and the City
    – Educational site visit (Downtown & the Old City)

  • Modern Turkish Republic
    Late Ottoman and Early Republican Era, Westernization and nation-building in the 20th century, Secularism and Political Islam, Art & Architecture in Istanbul – Educational site visit (Nicea & Bursa)

  • Politics and Culture in Modern Turkey
    Politics of ethnicity and the Kurdish issue, Recent Economic History, Urban regeneration & shanty towns, The socially-excluded, Istanbul in movies & literature- Educational site visit (Princess Islands)

  • Turkey in World Politics and Economics
    Turkey, US and NATO, Turkey and the European Union, Turkey and the Middle East – Educational site visit (Bosphorus)

  • Turkish for foreigners (24 hrs load of class work)
    Weekend & afternoon tours complementing in class lectures

  • Course load: 6 credits (9 ECTS)
