Explore the essential role Cultural and Historical roots play on achieving timeless and universal creations in Art and Design while extending your understanding of Turkish art with Istanbul at the background where multi-layer and multi-cultural texture commingle. 

Işık University School of Fine Arts in cooperation with the International Office is happy to announce a new class: Art and Design: From Bosphorus to Golden Horn.  We welcome all international applicants to this opportunity to meet and study with people from different countries and cultures, on a cosmopolitan campus overlooking the beautiful Blacksea beaches in Istanbul. The program covers lectures spanning a wide range of topics: from art history to textile design, photography to architecture, industrial design to painting, graphic design to film-making.  In addition to formal lectures there will be hands-on art/design projects, workshops, cultural and historical site visits in and around Istanbul.

The academic staff of Işık University School of Fine Arts is composed of faculty who are very experienced and highly qualified both as practising artists/designers as well as professors. The Program offers free optional Turkish language classes beside focusing on various activities and cultural events including various tours in and around the city, exploring Turkish cuisine, movie showings, Turkish folk dances and drum playing practices.

The university also hosts students from all around the world, creating a multicultural learning environment. Hence, students get exposed to the urban Turkish life, enjoy friendship and hospitality of different people in the warm and lively atmosphere of Istanbul. Our campus at Şile, a suburb of Istanbul along the Black Sea Coast, also provides opportunities for various workshops and outdoor activities such as cycling, swimming, camping, hiking, rafting and beach-volleyball.


GSE/HSS 482 – Art and Design: From Bosphorus to Golden Horn

3 credits (5 ECTS) – 16 hours of beginner’s level Turkish language classes (optional).

  • Art and Politics From Byzantium to Modern Turkey
    Byzantine Art and Architecture, Istanbul in Paintings, Ottoman Art, Westernization Period.
    – Educational site visit (Downtown & the Old City).
  • Art in Ottoman Daily Life
    Waterside houses, Fabrics and Apparel, Photography in late Ottoman Era, Coffee Cups and Tea Glasses.
    – Educational site visit (Nicea & Bursa).
  • Art, Society and Environment
    Changes in the Golden Horn, Environmental Art projects, Ottoman Groves and Gardens.
    – Educational site visit (Princess Islands), Sustainable Design Tour at Grand Bazaar.
  • Art and Desing 
    Aesthetic approaches in Photography,Movie-making, Ex-libris, Linoleum technique.
    – Educational site visit (Bosphorus).
  • Turkish for foreigners (16 hrs load of class work)
  • Turkish Dance Lessons.
  • Movie viewings.
  • Weekend & afternoon excursions complementing in class lectures.
    Course load: 3 credits (5 ECTS)
